Rent Increases
If you live in a city with Rent Control, your city's rent control law limits rent increases.
If you do not live in a city with rent control, your landlord can raise your rent by any amount. Before raising your rent, your landlord must give you a:
- 30-day written notice if the increase is 10% or less.
- 60-day written notice if the increase is over 10%.
If you have a lease, the landlord cannot raise your rent until the lease expires.
A landlord cannot raise your rent, evict you, or decrease services if you complain to a government agency or take part in a tenant’s organization. This protection is good for 180 days from the date you filed your complaint.
