New Consumer Laws 2012
Recorded Conversations: City Attorney can do them

Effective January 1, 2012
Summary: Authorizes City Attorneys with misdemeanor authority to record conversations without obtaining prior permission.
Background: Under California law, both parties in a conversation must consent to recording their conversation. District Attorneys and the Attorney General have the authority to record conversations they are entitled to hear. District Attorneys can give permission to City Attorneys to record such conversations.
The New Law: Allows City Attorneys who have misdemeanor authority to record conversations they are lawfully permitted to hear without having to obtain the District Attorney’s permission.
