Massage Therapists: Can’t get fake diplomas
SB 285 - SB 285 Chapter 149 - Penal Code §§628
Effective January 1, 2012
Summary: Makes it a misdemeanor to provide a certificate, diploma or other document that affirms completion of massage therapy training if it is not true.
Background: Under present law, massage therapists must have 500 hours of massage therapy training in English at a school approved by the California Massage Therapy Council. This requirement is partially aimed at limiting human trafficking. Generally, Police Departments and the California Massage Therapy Council require a transcript from an accredited massage school certifying that the student has received 500 hours of massage training in English.
The New Law: Makes it a misdemeanor to provide a certificate, diploma or other document that affirms completion of massage therapy training if it is not true. The law also allows law enforcement agencies to provide information to the California Massage Therapy Council in cases connected to massage therapy including crimes related to prostitution.
