Moving Companies: More Protections For Consumers
Public Utilities Code Sections 5133,
5134, 5142, 5192, 5248, 5285
The Public Utility Commissions (PUC) licenses and regulates moving and storage companies that operate within California. As a result, the PUC was usually the only agency that investigated complaints against predatory moving and storage companies.
This new law authorizes any law enforcement agency to investigate complaints against predatory moving and storage companies. This law also authorizes law enforcement agencies to take goods being held hostage by a moving company and return them to the rightful owner if the moving company is operating illegally.
This law also lets the PUC fine a moving company up to $30,000 or revoke its license for theft or fraud.
