Identity Theft: New Definition Of “Person” And Greater Penalties For Repeat Offenders
Penal Code Section 530.5
It is a crime to steal a person’s identity to commit fraud.
This new law changed the definition of “person” to include businesses, associations, and public entities. This new law also increases the penalties for repeat offenders and thieves who steal the identity of 10 or more people. The new penalties include up to one year in state prison or a fine, or both.
