Conservators:

Private conservators must meet education and experience requirements before a court can appoint them (Rules of Court 7.1060)

The court often appoints private conservators to take over the financial affairs of seniors when they can no longer handle their own affairs, and their family members don’t take care of them.

Before this law, people did not need to have any education or experience to be appointed by a court as a private conservator.

This law requires that private conservators meet specific education and experience requirements in order to be appointed. This law also bars convicted felons and abusers from becoming conservators.

This law does not apply to family members.

Action: DCA’s Consumer Services Unit takes complaints against private conservators, family members, and others accused of financially abusing seniors and dependent adults.
